Is going to the movies considered a date?

A guy friend from college recently asked me for my phone number, then asked me later that same night to his frat's semi-formal. Since then we've been texting and emailing (since it's winter break). He mentioned that he wished the weather weren't so bad so he could come visit me (since we live a few town apart). He called today and we talked for just an hour and he asked if maybe I wanted to go to the movies. This would be the first time I've seen him by myself. What do you think?
