What is UCI like? Overal, what is Irvine like? Is it a big or small city? How badly do I need a car?

Hi, I've recently received acceptance from UCI and it is most likely that I will go there for my college experience. However, I'm not sure how Irvine is like and I'm planning on going to visit it soon, but I'd just like some intel before going. I'm planning on getting a job once I attend UCI and I was wondering if UCI is located near any potential part-time job opportunities? Also, is the campus near any shopping centers? In general, do I need a car to get to where I need to go? Thanks!
