Is teaching really as hard as it sounds in my education textbook?

My Bowling Green State University Education textbook is talking about handling diversity, teaching strategies, communication skills, essments and lesson plans. Is this really what teaching is like, or is it completely different once you get started? i mean, I know for the most part these things are necessary, but do you actually consciously think about these things while you're teaching? Or is it more second-nature?
