Why is the public so often leaning more toward Nurture, in the nature vs nurture debate?

I have been doing some study in the field, and there seems to be a common agreement among some experts that nature has the greater influence. Yet if I see a televised debate on the matter of, for instance; intelligence. Then audience will clap and cheer for the side representing nurture despite the fact that the nature side might be more valid. So why does the public seem to lean more toward nurture, when many experts claim nature is the greater factor?
