Is this considered personification?

The instructions for a poetry ignment at school tell me to identify any figurative language found in my poem. One of the lines says "the shadows continue to grow." My teacher warned us not to label anything as personification if the object can perform the human-like quality. So, do shadows "grow"? Thanks for the help (:
